Watch//Listen:
Jaz Henry welcomed Chimera into her home in East Houston just as the sun was setting. To get to an idea of how her mind works, we wandered around her home like Alice and found upstairs a photographer’s dream. There were enlargers, film, and prints everywhere!
Jaz Henry is a mixed media photographer who works mainly with non-silver photographic processes. What that means is that she not only knows how to use a camera, but she can create her own negatives using various sources. In much of her work, you will notice a blue tint. This is due to a process called “cyanotype”. For this process Henry uses The Sun and a couple of chemicals to create her prints. (This process pre-dates the equipment that she has upstairs!)
The result is breathtakingly beautiful. She uses a mixture of found images, symbolism and the female form to create kaleidoscopic collages and surreal surroundings.
Jaz Henry’s goals include building a darkroom and showing her work at SoHo Gallery in New York.
